introduction
The fifth installment in George Miller's iconic series explores the origins of tough driver Furiosa, played by Anya Taylor-Joy. Dystopias have rarely felt as dark and thrilling as in George Miller's "Mad Max" series. For decades, Miller has captivated viewers with hallucinatory images of a bleak, violent world that resembles reality and is so vivid that it gives us goosebumps. No matter how familiar his alternative universes may seem, his filmmaking creates such an intense sense of elation that it's easy to simply become intoxicated by its overwhelming spectacle. Apocalypse? That's cool!
But since the original “Mad Max” was released in 1979, its appeal has diminished somewhat as the distance between Miller’s bleak world and our reality has narrowed. Set "a few years later," his first film follows highway patrol cop Max Rockatansky (Mel Gibson), as he maintains some semblance of a normal life with his wife and child. It is clear that hell is about to come to Max, and this is revealed from the opening shot of the 'Hall of Justice' sign, which is reminiscent of the phrase from Auschwitz. If I had heard such an association, I might have flinched, but any discomfort soon disappeared as the chase, collision, roar of the engine, and crazy laughter followed.
Miller's latest and fifth film, "Furiosa: The Mad Max Saga," focuses on the origins of young Furiosa (Anya Taylor-Joy), played by Charlize Theron in the previous film "Mad Max: Fury Road" (2015). It tells the story of a strong truck driver. Miller's masterpiece, "Fury Road," is the pinnacle of his cinematic genius and a change in narrative and tone from his previous films. In "Fury Road," Max (Tom Hardy replaces Gibson) remains the titular protagonist, but the dramatic and emotional center of the film is Furiosa and her journey.
“Furiosa” follows Furiosa from childhood to young adulthood, from freedom to captivity and, over time, to gaining limited sovereignty. The film opens with 10-year-old Furiosa (Alila Brown) foraging near her paradise called her multiple mother's green places. As she tries to grab her iconic ripe peach, her moment of tranquility is shattered by bikers who find her hygiene a mess. Soon they tie Furiosa to a motorcycle and take her across the desert, with her mother (Charlie Frazer) and another woman pursuing her on horseback. This chase signals the beginning of a fight for power and survival, and Miller doubles the tension by switching between close-up shots and expansive long shots. The contrast between the noisy energy of the bikers and the silence of the desert brings to mind the traditional scenery of Western films.
Furiosa's journey becomes even darker when she is handed over to the warlord Dementus (Chris Hemsworth), the ruler of the bikers. Hemsworth is good at bringing out the exaggerated gestures and absurdity of the character, and Dementus is portrayed as a person who is both vain and ridiculous. This figure appears to be inspired by the heroic champion and Arab sheikh from the epic film "Ben-Hur."
The power of the "Mad Max" series comes from Miller's ability to dramatically enhance stories told across families, tribes and cultures. A modern-day myth-maker, Miller's background as a doctor brings a detailed attention to the human body, which is evident in the series' signature stunt work and scenes that demonstrate how machines and ecosystems work.
Furiosa's body is at the center of the film, especially as it deals with her survival in the Citadel from which she fled as a child. Her Furiosa hides her own identity and blends in among the Citadel's workers in order to survive as one of the young women isolated to bear offspring for the Citadel's leader, Immortanzo (Raki Hulme). As time passes, Taylor-Joy takes on the adult role of Furiosa and shows her changes.
Taylor-Joy's Furyosa shows a different side to Theron's intense anger and her deep sadness in "Fury Road." Although she is physically slimmer, Taylor-Joy's ballet training gives her her graceful and agile presence. Her large eyes capture the viewer's attention and add to the vulnerability and uncertainty of her character.
Her Furiosa's reticence protects her but also highlights her existential anguish. She is alone, spiritually and in every way, even more so until she meets Praetorian Jack. Her loneliness and burden add emotional depth to the film, making this exciting film feel very sad at times.
Furiosa
“Furiosa” fits well with “Fury Road,” but isn’t as powerful as its predecessor. Watching Furiosa struggle for survival offers a different, more depressing experience. Miller's creative storytelling remains fascinating, and "Furiosa" confirms that he is not only a great filmmaker, but also an apocalyptic prophet.
